Lasers and Aircraft Don’t Mix

On Aug. 22 the crew for an international charter jet flight from Iceland decending for landing at Kennedy Airport reported being hit in the cockpit by a green laser beam. They reported the incident to air traffic controlers, who reported it to the FAA and a few minutes later a police helicopter was dispatched to investigate from Suffolk County.
The police helicopter was en route the the suspected location of the incident somewhere over Brookhaven Calabro Airport when they too were hit with the laser. Two officers and an emergency medical technician were treated at nearby Stony Brook University Hospital for injuries to their eyes.
It wasn’t known whether anyone on the jet charter was injured. The police said that the FBI had been notified of the incident.
This is the latest in a string of laser related injuries or distractions from lasers by those willing to risk peoples lives so they can have a little fun. If you have a high powered laser please don’t point it at anyone driving any kind of machinery or aircraft. It could easily result in injury or accident for the innocent victims.
Its a very bad idea and can lead to serious jail time. In 2008 a man pointed a laser at two jetliners decending for landing at John Wayne Airport and was later convicted and sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for the offense.
