Production on the Eclipse 500 very light jet has been halted for nearly 4 years after the bankruptcy of the original developer but the number of Eclipse very light jets in the air could soon grow after Eclipse Aerospace was recently awarded a production certificate from the FAA. The economic downturn in 2008 led to the bancruptcy of Eclipse Aviation after it had built 260 Eclipse 500’s. The company assets were aquired by a group of investors forming Eclipse Aerospace. The new company was formed to provide support and upgrades to the in-service aircraft but also to restart the production line with an upgraded Eclipse 550 aircraft.
The new 550 is the same airframe as the original 500 but with improved avionics, auto-throttles, synthetic vision and a redundant flight management system. The 550 will still be the most fuel efficient light jet available in the market, as well as the least expensive in the very light jet category, with a price tag of around 2.7 million dollars.
