Aspen | Colorado
Aspen is the most populated city in Pitkin County. The population was placed at 6,658 in the 2010 census. Aspen has one of the most well known ski resorts in the world. The city is surrounded on three sides by wilderness areas: Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness, the Hunter-Frying Pan Wilderness, and the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.
While you most likely are going to Aspen for the hip deep powder days, there are tons of other activities to take part in throughout the year. In the winter along with the great skiing (and snowboarding if that’s your pleasure) there are several film festivals, many art exhibitions and fashion shows as well.
In the summer months there is fabulous hiking and camping opportunities in the surrounding wilderness and amazing fishing in the mountain lakes and streams as well. In June there is the Food & Wine Classic which has been held for over 30 years. The Aspen Music Festival & School has more than 350 classical music events over 8 weeks each summer in July and August. There is also a fabulous 4th of July celebration with festivities that include a parade, U.S. Air Force jet flyby, concerts, a children’s bicycle rodeo, and spectacular fireworks over Aspen Mountain.
In the Fall there are amazing colors as the leaves turn and the Snowmass balloon festival is the third weekend in September. The colorful balloons mixing with the fall colors is a sight you won’t soon forget.
